Life in Kherson

Life in Kherson

A Life of Quiet Courage in Kherson

In Kherson, where daily life is still shaped by the consequences of war, many elderly residents face unimaginable hardship. Yet even in these difficult circumstances, their resilience and determination continue to inspire us.

One of those people is Viktor Semenovich Belozerov, a 79-year-old man whose strength quietly tells the story of so many Ukrainians who refuse to give up.

Living with Severe Medical Challenges

Viktor lives with serious medical conditions that make everyday life extremely difficult. He must use both a catheter and a colostomy bag, which require constant care and attention.

Because of these medical needs, his wife spends much of each day helping him and washing laundry repeatedly just to keep up with the medical supplies and clothing that must be cleaned. It is exhausting work, but she does it with love and devotion.

Another photo taken recently at the hospital shows just how fragile Viktor’s health has become. Even so, he continues to fight through each day.

Cold Rooms and Water Shortages

Like many families in Kherson, Viktor and his wife are currently renting a small place to live. Conditions are extremely difficult.

Their home is cold, and water shortages are frequent, making even basic hygiene and medical care a daily challenge. For a man with Viktor’s health needs, these conditions are especially dangerous.

Yet leaving their home city is not an option they are ready to take. Kherson is where their life has been built, and where they hope to remain.

Gratitude from the Port Elevator Distribution Point

In Kherson, where daily life continues under the shadow of war, humanitarian aid remains a lifeline for many families. At the Port Elevator distribution point, one of the local women helping organize supplies recently shared her heartfelt thanks to those making this work possible.

She helps coordinate the distribution of essential items to residents who come each day in search of help—elderly people, families with children, and individuals with disabilities who often have nowhere else to turn.

Standing among stacks of supplies, she expressed deep gratitude to Ukrainian Children Inc. and the supporters who make these deliveries possible.

“Thank you to Ukrainian Children Inc. for the help you bring to our people. The supplies you send are so needed here. Many of those who come to us are elderly or struggling to survive through very difficult conditions. Your support allows us to give them food, warm items, and basic necessities they otherwise would not have.”

Every day at the Port Elevator distribution point, volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. The supplies provided through Ukrainian Children Inc. help fill shelves with essential goods and allow the local team to respond to urgent needs in their community.

For those living in Kherson, especially the elderly and vulnerable, these deliveries are more than just packages—they are reassurance that they have not been forgotten.

The woman paused before returning to her work, carefully organizing supplies for the next group of residents waiting outside.

Her final words captured what many here feel:

“Please tell everyone who helps Ukrainian Children Inc.—thank you. Your kindness reaches people who truly need it.”

Standing Together

Ukrainian Children Inc. continues to support communities across Ukraine by delivering humanitarian supplies directly to the people who need them most. Through partnerships with local volunteers and distribution centers like the one at the Port Elevator, aid can reach families even in the most difficult areas.

Your support helps keep this work going.

Together, we can continue bringing relief, dignity, and hope to those enduring the hardships of war. 🇺🇦

She Will Not Leave Her Home

She Will Not Leave Her Home

Standing With Grandmother Matrona in Kherson

In the city of Kherson, life has become a daily test of endurance. Shelling, damaged homes, power outages, and constant uncertainty have forced many families to flee. Yet some residents remain—often because they have nowhere else to go, or because their homes hold the memories of a lifetime.

One of those residents is a woman the community lovingly calls Grandmother Matrona.

A Life Rooted in Home

Grandmother Matrona is elderly and frail, but her spirit is strong. Her small home in Kherson has been part of her life for decades. It holds the memories of her family, her neighbors, and the life she built long before war reached her street.

When many others evacuated, she made a difficult decision.

She would not leave her home.

For Matrona, leaving would mean abandoning everything familiar. Instead, she stays, enduring the cold winters, the uncertainty, and the dangers that come with living near the front lines.

But she is not completely alone.

A Helping Hand When It Matters Most

Through Ukrainian Children Inc., local volunteers are able to reach people like Grandmother Matrona with direct humanitarian aid.

Because of supporters and partners, our teams are able to provide:

  • Food and basic supplies

  • Emergency assistance for heating and shelter

  • Personal visits to ensure elderly residents are safe and cared for

When aid arrived at her door, Matrona expressed deep gratitude. For someone living in such difficult circumstances, even small acts of kindness mean everything.

She thanked the people she has never met—the supporters who made the help possible.

Her words were simple but heartfelt.

She said she was grateful that someone still remembered her.

The Forgotten Elderly of Ukraine

Across cities like Kherson, thousands of elderly Ukrainians remain in damaged homes, unable or unwilling to evacuate. Many live alone, surviving on limited pensions and whatever help neighbors or volunteers can provide.

These are the people most easily forgotten during a long war.

But they should never be invisible.

At Ukrainian Children Inc., we believe that dignity and care should reach every person, no matter their age or circumstance.

Standing With Viktor: A Family’s Quiet Struggle in Kherson

In the frontline city of Kherson, Ukraine, families continue to endure daily uncertainty. Shelling, power outages, and economic hardship have become part of everyday life. But for some families, the struggle goes even deeper.

One of those families is caring for Viktor Vakhirovsky, a 21-year-old young man with a profound disability.

Viktor’s Life

Viktor has a childhood disability classified in Ukraine as Group 1A, the most serious category. Although he is 21 years old, Viktor’s development is similar to that of a five-year-old child.

He cannot speak.

He requires help with nearly every daily activity.

Viktor is not always able to use the bathroom independently, which means he must wear diapers and requires constant care and supervision.

Simple routines — eating, dressing, resting — all depend on the dedication of one person.

His mother.

A Mother’s Full-Time Care

Viktor’s mother spends every day caring for her son. She cannot work because Viktor needs continuous supervision and assistance.

Her entire life revolves around making sure Viktor is safe, clean, fed, and comforted.

Despite the challenges of living in a frontline region during war, she continues to provide this care with love and determination.

But the reality is that families like Viktor’s often struggle to meet even the most basic needs.

Food.
Hygiene supplies.
Diapers.
Basic household necessities.

Without outside help, these essential items can quickly become impossible to afford.

Kherson EMTs: Facing the Human Safari

Kherson EMTs: Facing the Human Safari

The documentary follows Shrek, a Ukrainian medic, and his small volunteer crew as they navigate Kherson’s streets under constant Russian FPV drone attack. Seen through Shrek’s own chest-mounted camera, the film captures the raw immediacy of their work: evacuating the wounded, retrieving the dead, and surviving the “double-tap” strikes that target rescuers as they arrive. Interwoven with field interviews and stark first-hand footage, the film exposes the deliberate targeting of civilians—what locals call a “human safari”—and the moral collapse it represents. Through the courage of Shrek’s team, it becomes not just a record of atrocities, but a testament to the endurance of those who choose to stay, to keep helping, and to keep Kherson alive.
